Email Etiquette for Students Nowadays, email has become inevitable part of every business or college setting. While back in time you could communicate with your professor face to face only, today you can compose an email and address your concerns or submit assignments (in case your professor allows submitting assignments via email). Naturally, to avoid awkward situations or misunderstandings and other unwanted problems, you have to follow email etiquette. To make it easier for you to email your professors or other college personnel appropriately, this article contains email etiquette tips that all students should follow. When to email your professor or other college personnel You have a problem that has to be addressed as soon as possible, but receiver isnââ¬â¢t in his/her office You have a valid excuse for not going to their office personally e.g. you are sick, not in town etc. You have easy question that can be answered in one paragraph or less You have assignment that can be submitted via email. When to avoid sending email to professor or other college personnel The problem you have is to complex to be dealt with in email Turning in assignments to professors who specifically made it clear they donââ¬â¢t want to receive projects via email Asking for extension for particular assignment (it should be done face to face) Topic of your email requires continuous conversation (do it face to face) *** Professional email address To send email to your professor, you should use your college email address (if you have one) or make sure the address is appropriate and professional in case you use some other emailing system. This will also save you from feeling uncomfortable because you emailed your professor using address like . TIP: if your college (or other email) address contains your initials only, before you get to the point of your email, identify yourself. Also, if youââ¬â¢re a part of large class, to make sure professor knows who sends the email you can include the class name and division. For example, ââ¬Å"this is John Smith from English literature class 8.30 ââ¬â 9.20, Divison 0008â⬠. Subject line ââ¬â there for a reason Sending email without filling out the subject line is very unprofessional. Therefore, when composing an email, you should always ensure thereââ¬â¢s a subject line describing what the email is about. Another reason why you have to enter subject is because otherwise it might end up in receiverââ¬â¢s spam folder if itââ¬â¢s recognized as randomly generated content. Address professor directly Instead of just launching straight into the request address your professor directly. For example, ââ¬Å"Good afternoon Dr. Jonesâ⬠or ââ¬Å"Dear, Dr. Smithâ⬠are good ways to start your message to the professor. This sets professional tone and indicates youââ¬â¢re showing respect. Be polite Regardless of the reason why youââ¬â¢re sending email to your professor, you should stay calm and be polite at all times. Therefore, donââ¬â¢t accuse, avoid making demands, and always remember to write please and thank you. When composing email, use professional writing style. Instead of I wanna knowâ⬠¦ use I would like to know whetherâ⬠¦ Be specific Always bear in mind that there are hundreds of students in your college and chances are likely they send emails to that professor as well. They donââ¬â¢t have time to read long emails that look like novels. Although you sometimes feel like you have a lot to say about certain subject, you should strive to make it specific and short. Be positive Letââ¬â¢s say youââ¬â¢re emailing your professor regarding the current assignment. Instead of saying If I complete the writing assignment you should opt for When Iâ⬠¦ Avoid using negative words or words that could be misunderstood in a negative manner i.e. you donââ¬â¢t want your professor to think youââ¬â¢re not capable to finish the assignment or to think youââ¬â¢re blaming him or her for something. TIP: avoid using smiley faces, emoticons, or winks. Identify attachments Yes, he or she will open attachment and see what you send, but it is more professional to identify what you attached. You should include filename, format, and the version of the program e.g. Attached: ââ¬Å"Mrs. Dalloway Essay.docâ⬠This file is in Microsoft Word 2007. TIP: consider sending file in rich text format such as PDF to ensure compatibility. Complaints Ideally, all complaints and problems should be addressed face to face. The vivid "Red Table" by Patrick Heron reflects love and solitude as well as denoting lifestyle and exuberance. Heron have an affinity for the vivid, exotic and captivating red, and this abstract still life painting shows an interior space with a table, a selection of everyday objects. The table seems to be set for one, which addresses sustenance, yet also gives a sense of solitude. Perhaps the time and comfort of home allowed the artist to look at these ordinary objects differently. The composition is inspired by forms and patterns extracted from the domestic surrounding, which allows more artistic freedom and activates the space around the objects. Simplicity adds a flare of innocence to the painting and invites the mind to think of the story of the place. It is provocative in a sense that red is played in various hues, contrasting with the bright yellow and yet implying connectivity. It is mysterious in a way that shapes are obscured but with details that strike out like questions. Leon Maurine's "Net" photograph shows direction and sense of belonging. Likewise, the "Net" curtain photograph also reflects aspiration, privacy, territory and voyeurism. This photograph shows a glimpse through a net curtain looking out onto a blurred view. The image creates a visual link between interior and exterior. The sheer layer of the net curtain infuses the two spaces. The image conveys a "pulse" of life on both sides. It makes us think about the time spent behind and beyond the net curtain. We commonly think of interior spaces as private and reflective. Often exterior spaces are more public and engaging. The relationship between domestic public and private spaces has never been static- its boundaries are changing with time and new ways of life. The details of the net, or crocheted curtain also invokes domesticity as a pained detail of art form. It is not something to be lightly taken, but with meditation and composure. One slip of the hook, or an extra count makes an imbalanced design and finish which juts out like a sore finger. Same thing is pictured with domestic life. What is the vascular reactivity? Vascular reactivity is essential in vascular function that allows the circulatory system to respond to physiological and pharmacological stimuli which require adjustment of blood flow and the vascular tone and diameter. Vascular reactivity occurs in two modes. Reactivity are vasoconstrictor and vasodilator reactivity. These forms may be exposed to levels both microvascular and macrovascular. Vascular reactivity in hypertension Vascular reactivity in humans has been studied in many different conditions with a variety of methods. The most effective methods use either intra-arterial or intravenous infusion after inhibition of sympathetic outflow and interpret the changes in flow and pressure in terms of work instead of vasoconstriction of resistance. Using these methods, the vascular reactivity to various substances, including norepinephrine and angiotensin II has been found to be increased in essential hypertension, but not in various types of renal hypertension. Some studies have shown that alpha-methyldopa, guanethidine and increased vascular reactivity, although lower blood pressure. Glucocorticoids increase reactivity in normotensive subjects, but not in patients with essential hypertension. Aldosterone and salt increased vascular reactivity, especially in hypertensive patients, but slightly in normotensive individuals (2). Vascular reactivity to different vasopressors has been extensively studied in different types of hypertension in experimental animals. The mechanisms underlying this hyper-responsiveness and its role in the development of hypertension are unclear. But, it has been suggested that high blood pressure may induce structural changes in the vessel wall adaptation, resulting in an increase of the wall: lumen ratio. This could responsible for the increase in vascular reactivity vasoconstrictors stimuli (4). Increased vascular reactivity in hypertension occurs in response to a variety of vasoconstrictor agents, epinephrine, norepinephrine, posterior pituitary extracts, tyramine and renin. Exposure to stress increases sympathetic outflow, and vasoconstriction induced stress can lead to vascular hypertrophy, which leads to progressive increases in peripheral resistance and blood pressure is repeated. People with a family history of hypertension and sympathetic vasoconstrictor obvious stressors increased laboratory tests such as cold and mental stress responses(5). Vascular reactivity to endothelin in hypertensive patients Endothelin is a potent vasoconstrictor substance as produced by the cardiovascular system. The vasoconstrictor response to endothelin-1 is slightly higher in hypertensive patients than in normal subjects. There is an increase of the activity of the vascular endothelin in patients with essential hypertension, which may be the pathophysiological relevance to their increased vascular tone (6).à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ãâ Vascular reactivity to catecholamine in hypertensive patients In hereditary essential hypertension, vascular reactivity is increased to vasoactive substances which act on the vascular sympathetic neuronal receptor complex and. Since this increase in reactivity is present in early disease progression and even pre-essential hypertension and associated with certain abnormal metabolism of catecholamines, this is probably an etiological factor. Inherited hypertension is probably caused by an abnormal gene or genes produce an abnormal protein or proteins that directly or indirectly affect sympathetic neural and systemic vascular contractile receptor sites (7). Established in human hypertension, baroreceptor mechanisms remain active. But the blood pressure is maintained at a high level again in place of the normal blood pressure. This process is known as reset baroreceptor. The upward adjustment of these baroreceptors occurs not only in the primary or essential hypertension, high blood pressure, but also secondary to renal disease or other types. In most patients with established hypertension, catecholamine excretion is within normal limits so that if the neurological part kept the blood pressure is increased in pressure, is probably the result of an increased effect activity nerve rather than an increase in the activity itself. This could occur by an increase in the sensitivity of the blood vessels to the endogenous norepinephrine produced by the sympathetic nerve endings. The hypertensive patients have a significantly greater response to norepinephrine than normal subjects. There are a number of possible relationships between increased vascular reactivity and high blood pressure. An important preliminary to elucidating the significance of the altered vascular reactivity is to determine whether it represents a metabolic or a structural vascular abnormality, which causes high blood pressure, or whether it is one of the ways in which a rise in blood pressure, initiated by some other mechanism, becomes an established change (8). After administrating norepinephrine to the patients with essential hypertension, it has been proven that the initial constriction of vessels is greater in hypertensive individuals than in normotensive individual. Hypertensive patients had a significantly higher response to norepinephrine than normal subjects. There are a number of possible relationships between increased vascular reactivity and high blood pressure. An important preliminary to elucidate the importance of altered vascular reactivity is whether it represents a metabolic abnormality or structural vascular, causing high blood pressure, or is one of the means by which an increase in blood pressure he started by another mechanism, becomes a set rate .
